Battle of the Books - 2011-2012

A Reading Contest for Middle School Students

The middle schools of Stafford County have decided to begin the reading contest “Battle of the Books” this school year. The contest is a promotional reading program with a county-wide competition in the spring. Each middle school will create a team of up to twelve students who together have a comprehensive knowledge of fifteen pre-selected books. These teams will compete against each other at the Stafford County Battle of the Books to test their understanding of these books in a Jeopardy-style quiz of knowledge in March of 2012.

Cafe' Book - 2011-2012

On February 1, 2012 we will hold our first meeting for Café’ Books.
This is a program sponsored by the public library in cooperation with school librarians. Café’ Books is open to all 7th and 8th grade students. Any student interested in participating in the program will need to complete a contact and a public library card application. Students will be getting more info at a later date. We will meet nine times during their lunch periods to discuss the books we have read. Students are asked to read a minimum of three of the selected 20 books. We will have two culminating activities: one at school where we vote for our favorite book and the other at the public library where students will enjoy games, an author visit or a special speaker. For more information about the program please to http://www.teenspoint.org/school/cafebook/index.asp.
Virginia Readers' Choice - 2011-12

  • Write a brief summary of the book
  • Meet with Mrs. Godwin or Mrs. Miller for a brief "Book Chat" (oral summary)
  • Create a plot diagram or poster with enough detail to prove that you have read the book
Students who read and receive credit for four or more books will participate in the end of the program pizza and voting party held in March. Students have until Feb. 27th to complete and report on the titles.  If you wish to learn more about these books please go to:
http:// www.vsra.org/VRCindex.html.  This site will provide you with summaries of each of the books.
